As 2023 recognises 50 years of Australia Vietnam diplomatic relations, the recent release of the Southeast Asia Economic Strategy 2040 by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) further solidifies this strong relationship by acknowledging the importance of Vietnam – Australia economic relations.
In the document foreword, Australian Special Envoy for Southeast Asia, Nicolas Moore AO, outlines the strategy’s goal of ‘providing general recommendations to boost economic engagement between Australia and Southeast Asia, as well as specific recommendations for each country.’
Aligned with the strategy’s key message of increased regional cooperation, the Vietnam Australia Centre (VAC) represents an example of a specific country to country initiative reflecting Australia and Vietnam’s commitment to knowledge sharing and collaboration to support Vietnam’s leadership capability development.
Senator the Honourable Penny Wong, Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs greets Professor Dr Nguyen Xuan Thang, President of the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics (HCMA) at the 2023 VAC Forum.
The VAC is drawing together Australian and Vietnamese experts to support Vietnam’s future leadership to address national and global challenges. It is delivering targeted training, capacity building and research activities for Vietnamese Government officials, and will be the centre of choice for engagement and discussions that are priorities for both governments.
